Abstract

Aboriginal people are over-represented in the Northern Territory accident figures. Approximately 23% of the population in the Northern Territory is Aboriginal; however, a five-year annual average (1987 - 1991) shows 38%, 125 of 331 of road users killed were Aboriginals. In 1992 and 1993, this figure exceeded 50% for the first time on record and the pattern for 1994 is similar. This paper will briefly outline efforts currently under way to address this problem. In particular it will discuss the recent research carried out in consultation with rural and remote Aboriginal communities.
