Abstract

A survey of truck tyre has been based on a thousand tyre pressure and axle mass measurements made on heavy trucks stopped at weigh sites in Tasmania. The survey found that a significant number of tyres were above the prescribed limit for tyre pressures. A small number of tyres were found to be underinflated. Increasing tyre pressures could promote an increased frequency of flushing, rutting and cracking of wearing courses all generated by higher stresses within base courses. It is suggested that much more attention should be paid to tyre pressures when considering legal loads, pavement performance and design.
