Abstract

The paper includes a brief literature review and then describes a survey of vehicle lateral placement on Austrian highways. The survey was carried out on 11 sites in Victoria and six sites in Queensland. These sites represented a range of shoulder types, shoulder widths, lane widths and delineation treatments. No difference was found in the lateral placements data from the two states. The study found that the main factors affecting lateral placements at the sites were shoulder type and lane width. The effect of unsealed shoulder width was examined but was unclear. No effect of edgelines on daytime lateral placement could be detected. There was a significant variation in lateral placement between meeting and non-meeting vehicles.
