Abstract

The safety of a driver in a mini car was analyzed using MADYMO in crashes into a rigid wall or a large car. The injury risk to the driver in the mini car is examined by investigating the stiffness and restraint system of the mini car. When the stiffness of the mini car is low, the injury risk to its driver is low in a crash into a rigid wall. However, the risk of injury relating to intrusion becomes high in a crash with a large car. When the large car has additional crush space designed for a crash with a mini car, the injury risk of the driver in the mini car decreases, especially when the stiffness of the mini car is low. The optimum restraint system combined with high stiffness of the mini car can be effective in reducing the injury risk to the driver in crashes not only into a rigid wall but also a large car.
