Abstract

In this paper the authors present research into an algorithm for use in an antilock-braking system (ABS) of brake-by-wire (BBR) vehicles using eddy-current-based braking (ECB). The actuator control algorithm is a sliding-mode-type supervisory that maximizes the usage of ECB. The system is suitable for braking across all speed ranges. The hardware used includes the ECBs, BBW pedal assembly and sensors, wheel-speed sensors, a generator for the ECB, power-electronic circuitry for the ECB, and a prototyping micro-controller. The controller begins with formal definitions for wheel slip, longitudinal direction of the road plane, and wheel rotation dynamics. Experimental results for the project indicate good slip regulation for low friction coefficient surfaces as compared to non-ABS systems.
