Abstract

The authors focus on concrete elements of test tyre measurement representativity. Users of PIARC tyres built a database which included PIARC test tyre and current commercial tire measurements on various pavement surfaces. Study results indicated that ribbed or smooth PIARC tyres allow skid resistant performance on various pavement surfaces to be offered to road users. Commercial tyres show very close measured friction coefficient comparisons with PIARC tyres on good or very good skid-resistant surfacings. PIARC tyres always lead to lower friction values than commercial tyres, and have larger value differences, on average or poor skid-resistant surfacings. Smooth PIARC tyres give much lower results, and have a considerable measurement difference from new commercial tyres for large slip angles. Wide worn tyres with lower friction values show a large high-speed performance reduction.
