Abstract

Specific interest in head protection in the field of traffic safety is a relatively recent phenomenon; even more recent is the application of scientific principles of energy management to the development of head protective equipment.

The magnitude of today's problem of head injury and brain damage in traffic accidents is reviewed and the need for adequate preventive countermeasures displayed.

Based on an in-depth study of 617 cases of helmeted head impact in vehicular accidents, and on extensive dynamic testing of protective headgear in laboratory studies, certain design criteria for protective headgear are discussed in relation to head injury prevention.
