Abstract

Are racing and safety natural enemies? The best evidence that they're not is provided by the American Association for Automotive Medicine. If it hadn't been for the common interest in auto racing that brought six physicians together in 1957, we might not be enjoying the productive results of this conference and the fourteen others that have preceded it.

The Motor Racing Safety Society was founded in 1969 in the belief that it could help further communications on all aspects of racing safety among professionals who were active in this field. The founders hoped that through the Society's efforts, an active interchange of information might be possible between the rapidly expanding field of passenger car safety research and the much younger discipline of motor racing safety. We also sought links with other activities, such as aviation engineering and medicine, that reached levels of physical and personal stress comparable to those in auto racing.
