Abstract

The patient cases reviewed for this paper are those children admitted to Henrietta Egleston Hospital, a children's hospital, in Atlanta, Georgia. This hospital does not have an active emergency clinic. the patients admitted in this study had received their initial evaluation elsewhere and were referred for admission to the neurosurgical service.

The review reflects the admissions of the author and his four associates during the years of 1967 through July, 1971 as well as those of five other attending neurosurgeons on the staff of this hospital. Several of the admissions were those of attending pediatricians requesting neurosurgical consultations.

Unfortunately, the majority of the medical records reviewed do not record accurately the vehicle type or year or make nor in many instances the position or restraint mechanism if used. Hence, this paper does not represent a statistical significant prospective study of vehicular collisions as so related to compartment improvements during this time interval. It is a record of passenger injuries sufficient to require neurosurgical evaluation and treatment representing clinical interest.
