Abstract

A preliminary investigation by the University of California of the types of automotive glazing and methods for evaluating dynamic performance. Some of the variables were identified by high speed photography of full-scale automotive collisions conducted at the UCLA Test Site.

Performance for each type of glass is graphed for peak accererometer loads recorded when the simulated adult head strikes the inside of the side window glass. Three conditions of glass frame support were used: Rigid, inertial, and the conventional installation using a 1950 Plymouth door. Photographs of glass fracture patterns for specific energy and velocity inputs are also included.
